The St. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital is a charitable foundation of
the Venerable Order of St. John. The Hospital, which was founded in 1882, is located in East Jerusalem. Whilst it treats all who seek its care, irrespective
of race, creed or ability to pay, the reality is that it serves the predominantly Arab populations of the West Bank, Gaza
and East Jerusalem (population more than 3 million) for whom it is the sole provider of quality Ophthalmic care and professional
training. More than 48,000 outpatients are seen annually and more than 2,000 major eye operations performed. Furthermore,
a permanently staffed clinic is maintained in Gaza and there is a very active outreach programme of mobile clinics to the
villages and refugee camps in the West Bank. The Hospital is run as a heavily subsidised fee-based establishment, about 75%
of its income being derived from donations and grants.
In 1999, as part of the major restructuring of the Order, the
Hospital Foundation was established as a separate corporate entity, wholly owned by the Order. The Board of Directors, who
are also the Trustees, are appointed by the Grand Council of the Order. The headquarters are located in Clerkenwell, London
adjacent to the International Secreteriat of the Order; there is a salaried staff of three. The Hospital in Jerusalem currently
operates under a resident CEO who heads a small management team. |
